Christianity is a beautiful love relationship between us and our Lord. We step from knowing that God loves us because the bible says so, to experiencing it as a glorious ongoing reality. This love relationship is as in marriage. Intimate knowledge of our Lord is acquired. We get to know His heart, His will for us and the joy of living our lives as He directs. It motivates us, instils in us a hunger to know and serve Him more and more. As we get to know Him, He becomes increasingly our security. Our confidence in Him grows, so that we know He will not let us down as we do whatever He asks of us. The first commandment is to love Him with all our heart, soul, strength and mind, so that this can be a reality in our lives.

I had not been a Christian for long, when I found the verse, 1Peter 1:8, which reads, ‘whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory’. At that time things were not going too well for me and I thought, I would like to have that ‘joy unspeakable’. What are the conditions? To love and believe in Him. I do believe, so the issue was truly loving Him. If I was in love with someone, I would be thinking of that person all the time, delighting in them, going over precious moments. I decided to do that with my Lord. I remember walking to a neighbouring farm, saying, with enthusiasm, ‘I love You’. I had a distinct warm feeling inside, which I now realize was the Spirit within me delighting in my heart. I walked across the field with a spring in my step—hallelujah! He was encouraging me. The more I thought of Him, and my heart whispered endearments to Him, the more joy welled up from within. When having to do something boring, like a household chore, I would tell Him of my love and  that I was doing it for Him, and it no longer was a chore! Now, whatever the circumstance, I know a joy inside. I can love Him always, be in His presence, and the scripture says, in His presence is fullness of joy.

About the Author

Harriet Sleigh has a passion burning within her. She has taken the love, life and fire of the gospel, predominantly to the underprivileged, in Africa India and Pakistan, signs and wonders abound. What she has she imparts, irrespective of education. Key truths come alive in their hearts; they live them; their lives are transformed. Through three-day Revival Bible Schools her teaching has enabled pastors and 'ordinary members' to do the same. Indeed, an illiterate ex-witch doctor, who embraced these truths in such a school in Malawi, joined her three years later in Mozambique with much joy. She had led eighty-two other witch- doctors to Jesus.
