Changing Colours tells the story of three unusual looking Green Peppers who arrive in the kitchen from the garden. Who are they? Can be they be trusted? Are they good enough to eat? The occupants of the kitchen wonder. The onion is suspicious, but the sweet potato encourages the onion to be nice to these strangers.

When these peppers start to change to another colour, the other vegetables begin to talk about their own skin colour, who is the brightest, who is the best, is one colour better than another: “The Onion thick skinned not easily offended is loud and proud of its golden-brown skin colour…The super cool lemons are superstar they think Yellow is by far the best colour ever.”

The kitchen vegetables are a diverse bunch who change colour, share thoughts and experience a range of emotions as they look, judge and learn from each other. This fun and thoughtful book focuses on the important subjects of being comfortable in your own skin, respecting each other and learning to accept people who are different. With its delightful personification of veggies, Changing Colours encourages youngsters to be more tolerant and accepting, highlighting that as a human race, “We are One”.

Changing Colours is a sweet story with a bold message which is beautifully presented to young readers. Aimed at children aged seven and above, this superb picture book is an engaging, entertaining and educational read that will spark bright young minds everywhere.

About the Author

Maureen Gordon is of African Caribbean descent but has lived in the UK for more than 50 years. She has travelled extensively and some of her stories are inspired by her adventures and covers different genres. She has worked in the field of social care for many years and currently runs a support service for children and families, offering therapeutic support and activities for parents and children to spend quality time together.

Maureen’s first children's book, Penny & Monique's Caribbean Adventure, was borne out of her childhood memories from her native Jamaica. It was written to provide a cultural backdrop in teaching children about aspects of the Caribbean that would be new, interesting, and different. Caribbean adventures inspired her to begin writing for children, books that would not only educate and inspire but to include characters in the stories that children, especially of black and ethnic minority backgrounds, could relate to. Her latest book, Changing Colours, introduces the subjects of tolerance and supporting others using vegetables we all know and love as the main characters.
