Facebook And Emails. How To Get More Readers!

January 20, 2015

We are regularly asked by authors about Facebook advertising. Will it provide ROI? How do I market my novel effectively on social media? I have spent money on Facebook advertising but haven't seen a return, what did I do wrong?

Facebook is a tricky platform to obtain value from as an author. However, there is a method that we have found successful. Not many people know that you can create a Custom Audience on Facebook. This is done by using existing emails. Facebook uses the email addresses to find those users and promote your content to them. It will also target friends of those users. If they have already signed up to you blog or website, they are interested in your books.

Essentially, they are your best target customers!

For this to work you need to have a selection of email addresses. These may have been collected from your blog, main website, giveaways or some other means. There are a plethora of ways to collect them. The point is, if you aren't, you should be! If you haven't, then take a look at our post on how authors can collect emails and build their list of subscribers. If you already have a list of emails please read on!

The first step is to click on 'Manage ads' after clicking the arrow on the right hand side of the page.

This will take you to your Campaign and advertising dashboard.

If you haven't added a payment method, then head to 'Billing' in the advertising dashboard to do so.

Now you are in the campaign dashboard, select 'Audiences' from the menu on the left. You will then be presented with the screen below.

Click on Create Audience > Custom Audience > Customer List

You are then provided with three options. You can either import a file such as .CSV or other accepted format, copy and paste your list or if you use MailChimp you can simply import from there.

Once that is complete, you can then target your Facebook Ads at those who have already showed an interest in your books and their friends. It is very likely that if they have an interest in what you offer, their friends may also be interested.

A word of caution. Do respect your email list and think carefully about what you promised them when users trusted you with their email address.

Good luck! If you have any questions, please contact us.
