Towards the end of July last year Florence Remmer contacted us via our web site saying that she had children's poems and stories that she would like to see published but didn't know how to go about it.  Florence included an example of one of her poems for us entitled The Cobbler and we were all instantly charmed.  We were even more thrilled when we saw Florence's beatiful accompanying illustrations.

The Cobbler

An innovative Mole,
A Cobbler by trade,
Invented a shoe for the one footed Snail.

The Snails being footsore,
Formed a long queue
To purchase the Cobblers one footed shoe

The Mole realized

As the sale gathered speed
He’d forgotten to cater for Snails with left feet

The right footed Snails
Bought up the lot
Delighted to have a shoe for their foot

Whilst the left footed Snails
Went on their way
Grumbling and shoeless I’m sorry to say.

Following various discussions on the best way to move forward, Florence decided she would like to see her book of short stories published, and in November Tales from Tulgey Wood was completed.

"A highly imaginative author shares the magic of animal and fairy tales with the reader fortunate enough to purchase this lovely little book.  Adults too will appreciate the winsome style of Florence Remmer.  A charming read." - Lynnie

The Cobbler would ultimately find it's way into Florence's first poetry book, An Ostrich Explains and Other NonSuch Poems, which we published in January of this year.

"A brilliant book.  Lovely quirky poems.  Recommended." - Gemma Hocks

Hot on the Ostrich's heels came The Muchly Fed Up Tortoise and More NonSuch Poems

"This books is another great achievement from Florence Remmer.  My grandchildren just love reading all the witty, quirky poems.  Keep up the good work, more poems please." - Jean Livingstone

Jean, along with all of Florence's other fans, will be delighted to learn that her latest collection of poems has just been released.  The Petulant Owl and Even More NonSuch Poems is available from Amazon now.

An owl in a nightie!  A carpenter cat!
Car-Booters defying the rain…
Yes!... The animals, insects and fauna
Have asked me to scribe once again!

They tell of a seagull allergic to fish!
Four mice fighting over a pea!
A petulant owl!  A sleep-walking cat!
And the plight of an ex-circus flea!

After harking in awe to their stories…
… I fast sharpened my pencil anew!
And the animals, insects and fauna’s new tales
I have scribed and will pass on to you.

Florence was born in 1933 and lived through the terrible bombings of Bradford during the second world war.

She went to work in the mills at the age of 14 before meeting and marrying a soldier and becoming an army wife.  Florence and her husband went on to have 3 children, one born in Accra Ghana, one in Bunde Germany and one in Bahrain in the Persian Gulf.

In 1979, once the children were grown up, Florence achieved her early ambition of becoming a nurse and she worked in Riyadh Saudi Arabia for two years

After the sad loss of her husband 22 years ago, Florence began writing poems and stories, although she had always enjoyed weaving tales for her children when they were young
